The DIN 934 imperial hex nut UNC/UNF is a standard hexagon nut with an inch (imperial) thread, used with imperial bolts and threaded rods. Its shape corresponds to the metric DIN 934 nut, while the inch dimensions and thread follow the American standards ASME B18.2.2 (nuts) and ASME B1.1 (threads).
It is used in the maintenance and repair of machinery, vehicles, marine engines, agricultural and construction equipment, and any equipment built to inch dimensions, where a metric nut is not a substitute.
How to choose an imperial nut
- The thread must match the bolt – a 1/2"-13 UNC nut fits only a 1/2"-13 UNC bolt. UNC and UNF of the same diameter are not interchangeable.
- UNC (Unified National Coarse) – coarse thread; faster assembly and lower risk of thread damage.
- UNF (Unified National Fine) – fine thread with a smaller pitch; better vibration resistance, common in automotive and hydraulic applications.
- Strength – steel imperial nuts are graded to SAE J995 (e.g. Grade 5 and Grade 8). Choose a nut grade that matches the bolt grade.
How to read the designation
1/2"-13 UNC means: nominal thread diameter 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), 13 threads per inch (TPI), coarse thread. The same diameter with a fine thread is designated 1/2"-20 UNF.
Threads per inch (TPI) – UNC / UNF
- 1/4" – 20 / 28
- 5/16" – 18 / 24
- 3/8" – 16 / 24
- 7/16" – 14 / 20
- 1/2" – 13 / 20
- 5/8" – 11 / 18
- 3/4" – 10 / 16
- 1" – 8 / 12
Matching bolts are available in the families Imperial hex head bolt UNC/UNF – full thread and Imperial hex head bolt UNC/UNF – partial thread. Select the size in the table below, and contact us if you need help choosing.
